I have an ever-growing list of books like this too. :) The only one of these I've read is Elegant Universe by Brian Greene and I loved it. His follow up book to that one is on my current list, lol. I have wanted to read The Kite Runner for like two years now, I think I'm going to pick it up soon...

It’s considered Mr. Shem’s most ambitious work.
